It's that time of year again! Everyone and their dog is heading outside to enjoy the warmer weather and sunshine! Some of your skills may be a little rusty if you haven't been out in public as much, so here are a few reminders for dogs and humans alike!

  • Keep your dog on a leash unless in a designated off-leash area. This includes transporting to and from off-leash areas.

  • Keep your dog close to you and avoid interfering with other people's enjoyment of the great outdoors.

  • Ask for permission before allowing your dog to approach other people or dogs.

  • Always carry waste bags and clean up after your dog immediately. Dispose of waste appropriately.

  • Train your dog to respond to basic cues, play with you, and provide ample time for dog stuff like sniffing and exploring.

  • Familiarize yourself with local leash laws and regulations. Some areas may require specific leash lengths or types. In Nanaimo, dogs must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet in all public areas.

  • Avoid overwhelming your dog. If your dog is struggling, give them more space away from difficult situations.

  • Pay attention to your dog’s behaviour and body language. It can shift rapidly.

  • Stay alert to your surroundings.

Following these dog etiquette guidelines will help create a positive experience for you, your dog, and those around you while walking in public. Always prioritize safety and respect for others to enjoy your outings together.
