It's that time of year again! Everyone and their dog is heading outside to enjoy the warmer weather and sunshine! Some of your skills may be a little rusty if you haven't been out in public as much, so here are a few reminders for dogs and humans alike!
Keep your dog on a leash unless in a designated off-leash area. This includes transporting to and from off-leash areas.
Keep your dog close to you and avoid interfering with other people's enjoyment of the great outdoors.
Ask for permission before allowing your dog to approach other people or dogs.

Always carry waste bags and clean up after your dog immediately. Dispose of waste appropriately.
Train your dog to respond to basic cues, play with you, and provide ample time for dog stuff like sniffing and exploring.
Familiarize yourself with local leash laws and regulations. Some areas may require specific leash lengths or types. In Nanaimo, dogs must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet in all public areas.
Avoid overwhelming your dog. If your dog is struggling, give them more space away from difficult situations.
Pay attention to your dog’s behaviour and body language. It can shift rapidly.
Stay alert to your surroundings.
Following these dog etiquette guidelines will help create a positive experience for you, your dog, and those around you while walking in public. Always prioritize safety and respect for others to enjoy your outings together.
