Joy or Tears? The Long Line Dilemma

WE LOVE using a suitable Long Line. Not the retractable lines, but rather a regular long line! As a dog owner, there’s nothing quite like the joy of watching your furry friend explore the world around them. The excitement in their eyes, the wag of their tail – it truly warms the heart. But amidst all the fun and adventure, there’s one aspect that requires careful management: the long line.

The Tripping Hazard

Imagine this: you’re out for a leisurely stroll with your beloved pup. The sun is shining, birds are chirping, and all seems right with the world. You decide to give your dog a bit more freedom by using a long line, allowing them to wander and sniff to their heart’s content. Sounds perfect, right? Well, not quite.

As you walk, you can’t help but notice the line trailing behind you and dragging on the ground, seemingly innocuous at first. But as you pick up the pace, that innocent line becomes a potential tripping hazard. One wrong step, and suddenly you’re tangled up, risking a fall and an embarrassing moment in front of passersby.

A Personal Story: The Danger of Leash Burn, it happened to my friend, just yesterday......

While a tripping hazard is troublesome enough, a serious danger lies in leash burn or rope burn. It's a common occurrence when a dog takes off unexpectedly, pulling the line through your hands , or even worse, the leash catching behind your legs and causing nasty leash burn on the back of your legs while your dog runs away at rapid speed. The friction of the line against your skin can lead to painful burns even lacerations that will require medical attention, leaving you wincing in discomfort.

But the risk doesn’t stop there. If your dog bolts away from you without warning, the line can snag around their legs too, or suddenly jolts them backwards, causing them distress and potentially leading to injuries. So, how do you balance the desire to give your pup freedom with the need for safety?

Managing the Long Line: Tips for Safe Adventures

1. Stay Vigilant: Always keep a watchful eye on your dog when using a long line. Anticipate any sudden movements or potential hazards to prevent accidents. NEVER let the line between your hand and the dog drag on the ground, rather take it in and let it out as needed!

2. Proper Handling: Hold the line securely but in a way that allows for a quick release if needed. Avoid wrapping it around your hands to prevent leash burn and bruising. Here is a simple but effective way: with the palm of your leash holding hand up, drape the line overtop, and return overtop, creating nice loops on either side of your hand! that way it will NEVER lead to bruised fingers if your dog suddenly pulls away and it is easy to let out! (Proper handling: see picture above!)

3. Training Is Key: Teach your dog to walk politely on a leash to minimize the chances of them bolting or getting tangled up. Best Paw Forward can help you with that through our Good Manners program and our specialty Leash Walking Skills classes! .

4. Choose the Right Equipment: Invest in a high-quality long line that is durable and designed to withstand the rigors of outdoor adventures. We LOVE the biothane style lines or the more robust round soft cotton style. Opt for a length that gives your dog freedom while still maintaining control, recommended for small dogs: 10-12 feet, for medium and large breed dogs: 15-18 feet
